SUSTAINABILITY
At TROUBLE AND WILD we really care about the fashion industry's impact on our social and ecological environment and wanna try to be one of the outliers pulling in the opposite direction.
Manufacturing
All of our in house pieces are handmade in Montreal, QC by a skilled seamstress (Meet Maria!) who is compensated fairly and in accordance with Canadian labour laws for her work. After sampling a new piece Maria tells us how much she will charge per garment, usually ranging from $8 for more simple designs to $13 for complex designs.
Many of our pieces are made on a made-to-order basis - meaning we manufacture your piece after you order it! (Or sometimes we have one or two on hand just to get you your item as quick as possible). This creates a slow fashion cycle that minimizes overproduction and waste.
Fabrics and Materials
We try to source our materials as sustainably as possible, either by using deadstock fabrics or fabrics made of organic, sustainable or recycled fibres. However, it is not always possible as we do not have the economies of scale to be be fully consistent. It is something that we are striving towards and we hope to only support sustainable practices in the near future.
We try our best to make our packaging as eco-friendly as possible by using recycled materials and reducing the amount of packaging per piece.
Giving back
It's important to recognize that while giving customers other options to shop strains the pockets of fast fashion brands, it doesn't directly help garment workers. For this reason we have decided to donate a portion of our profits every quarter to Kiva, a micro financing company that facilitates crowdsourced loans to small businesses in developing countries. When the loan is repaid it is reinvested over and over to spread the wealth. Every quarter we will choose female led small garment and fabric businesses to support and continue to support as we reinvest. We have already made 13 loans to small female led textile and sewing businesses.
